Taking a GRE® General Test

Registration Process

To Register for the GRE General Test:

  • Log in to your ETS account or create an account. If you haven’t already created an ETS account, review the ID requirements page. It’s essential that the name you register with matches exactly the name as it appears on the ID you plan to use on test day. See more information in the section below.
  • On the GRE home page, select Register/Find Test Centers.
  • Select the GRE General Test
  • Verify your email address, then continue.
  • To select your test appointment, confirm your time zone, or select a new one
  • Choose the two-month window you want to search and then select your preferred date from the calendar.
  • Select an available time/date to test and click “Register for this test.”
  • Complete your registration and pay for your test.
  • Once your registration has been processed, you will receive a confirmation email from ETS.

ID Requirements

The following conditions must all be met by ID documents, with very few exceptions. Each ID document needs to:

  • be an original; photocopied documents are not allowed, and documents cannot be displayed on a mobile phone or any other digital system.
  • be a physical ID; electronic identification cards are not permitted to be sent to mobile phones or other electronic devices.
  • be a national, state, or provincial identity card granted by the government and recognized by the nation of which you are a citizen or permanent resident.

Who takes the GRE® General Test

Prospective applicants wishing to pursue master’s, specialized master’s in business, MBA, JD or doctoral degrees can take the GRE General Test. GRE scores provide a common measure of comparison used by admissions or fellowship panels. The Subject Tests gauge your proficiency in a specific area of study. They are intended for students who have an undergraduate major or extensive background in one of the following disciplines:
